Kemmon Wilson, a resident of Memphis, Tennessee, got the vision for better and more affordable motels after a family trip to Washington, DC. He disliked being charged extra for his five kids, and the accommodations were low quality. The first Holiday Inn opened in 1952 under the name Holiday Inn Hotel Courts. Wilson built more motels along the road entrances to Memphis with Wallace E. Johnson, and the number of motels grew to 50 by 1958. Holiday Inn was the first motel chain to provide online booking in 1995. Today, Holiday Inn has over 1100 locations, and it is the largest of the hotel chains with over 200,000 rooms to rent.
